FIRE STATION 71 IN THE CITY OF MALIBU TO BE REBUILT; FIREFIGHTERS TEMPORARILY RELOCATED
The Los Angeles County Fire Department is proud to announce that Fire Station 71 in the City of Malibu is being rebuilt. Originally built in 1939, this fire station is one of the County’s oldest, and is no longer able to keep up with newer, larger equipment resources or emerging technologies.
The first responders of Fire Station 71 will operate from a temporary fire station located at 30050 W. Pacific Coast Highway, adjacent to Zuma Beach Lifeguard Headquarters. The temporary facility housing Fire Station 71 is located just 1.8 miles west of the station’s former site. This location is centrally located to address the needs of the entire jurisdiction. Firefighters and equipment were transferred to this temporary site on September 26.
Abatement work on the former Fire Station 71, located at 28722 W. Pacific Coast Highway, begins the week of October 6, 2013, and demolition of the existing structure is scheduled for the week of October 14, 2013. Construction of the new Fire Station 71 will take 10 to 12 months to complete.
Once finished, this new, 5,800-square-foot state-of-the-art facility will feature individual dormitories, two full bathrooms, a day room, office space, and a bay large enough to accommodate two fire engines and a paramedic squad. The new station will also include an upgraded septic system designed to meet modern day standards.
Through the Los Angeles County Arts Commission’s Civic Art Program, the work of a local artist will be featured at the new fire station. Matt Doolin, a collaborator at Topanga Art Tile, was chosen from a field of over 50 applicants. His artwork will be a tile mosaic for the building’s façade.
