CAL FIRE/Butte County Fire Makes Arrest in South Chico Fire
Butte County, CA — On Wednesday afternoon, July 16th, at 2:15 p.m., CAL FIRE/Butte County Fire responded to a vegetation fire, reported as a possible escaped control burn in the vicinity of the 1200 block of Orchard Way.
The fire was extinguished and held to one tenth of an acre with damage contained to miscellaneous equipment and fencing.
During the fire cause investigation, an unknown substance was found and the Butte County Interagency Bomb Squad and Chico Fire Hazmat Unit was called in to aid in the investigation. The substance was identified as an explosive component.
As a result of this investigation, Robert Spencer McLaughlin, age 25, was arrested and booked into Butte County Jail for possession of an explosive substance and causing a fire. The incident remains under investigation.
