Half Moon Bay – At approximately 4:20 p.m. on Friday August 10, 2013, CAL FIRE along with several other local fire agencies responded to a vegetation fire along the 12000 block of Highway 92 near Half Moon Bay.
The fire burned less than an acre of vegetation along the northern side of Highway 92 and was controlled within an hour. The fire burned into a eucalyptus and pine tree grove before it was stopped. Flames as high as 20 feet were extinguished in the pine trees. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Investigators found an unusually large number of discarded cigarette butts, some with ash still attached, littered along the roadway. CAL FIRE reminds everyone that discarding cigarette butts along the roadside, especially lit cigarettes, is illegal and will result in a citation and even liability of fire suppression costs.
CAL FIRE was assisted by San Mateo County Fire Department, Coastside Fire Protection District, San Mateo County Sheriffs Department and California Highway Patrol
